Des Moines police identify pedestrian killed in Monday morning crash

A man who was hit by a pickup truck Monday morning near the intersection of East 15th Street and Dean Avenue has died, Des Moines Police Department Spokesperson Paul Parizek said in a news release.

Adan Babic, 47, of Des Moines was crossing East 15th Street eastbound at approximately 5:25 a.m. when he was struck by a northbound pickup truck, Parizek said. He was transported to Iowa Methodist Medical Center where he died of his injuries, according to the release.

Babic most likely failed to yield to oncoming traffic, resulting in the accident, Parizek said.

According to the release, this is the 10th Des Moines crash this year resulting in serious injury or death of a pedestrian, a 150% increase over similar crashes in 2021, the release said.

"Each of these crashes involves careless or reckless behaviors. As we enter the final weekend of the Iowa State Fair, and prepare for children to return to school, the men and women of the Des Moines Police Department would like to encourage all on or near our roadways to stay aware, don’t be distracted, and to always look twice," Parizek said.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, the release said.
