Des Moines police announced Saturday that a September killing has been ruled a homicide, marking 14 total homicides in the city in 2021.

Tony Wayne Hyde, 52, of Missouri was initially charged with willful injury causing serious injury after police had accused him of assaulting Timothy Guy Thacker, 62, multiple times in the 4900 block of Hubbell Avenue on Sept. 21.

Thacker suffered serious head and facial injuries and died five days later, according to a Des Moines Police Department news release.

On Thursday, police were notified that an autopsy ruled Thacker's manner of death was a homicide, the news release states.

Hyde's charge has been amended to first-degree murder.
