Hollywood has always loved turning a great book into something that glimmers on the silver screen. With the rise of streaming, there have been more adaptations in recent years, with books like the Bridgerton series, Little Fires Everywhere, and now Station Eleven being turned into buzzy TV shows.

This year is no different, with tons of great books coming to the small AND big screen. Check out these great books from the library to get ahead of the game before you watch them when they hit theaters or streaming services in 2022. You can find more books slated for adaptation this year on the DMPL Blog at dmpl.org/blog.

Death on the Nile, by Agatha Christie: Kenneth Branagh reprises his role as Hercule Poirot, one of literature’s most famous detectives. This time, the tranquility of a cruise along the Nile is shattered by the discovery that Linnet Ridgeway has been shot through the head. Coming to the big screen in February, also starring Gal Gadot and Tom Bateman.

Conversations with Friends, by Sally Rooney: After the success of Normal People, Hulu has picked up another Sally Rooney novel to bring to the small screen this year. In the book, Frances is a darkly observant young woman, vaguely pursuing a career in writing while studying in Dublin. She eventually befriends a well-known photographer and her husband, Nick. What begins as harmless flirtation between Frances and Nick gives way to a strange, painful intimacy. Starring Alison Oliver, Sasha Lane, Joe Alwyn, and Jemima Kirke.

Bullet Train, by Kotaro Isaka: A dark, satirical thriller by the bestselling Japanese author. Five assassins board a bullet train and find out their assignments have something in common. Bullet Train is an original and propulsive thriller that fizzes with incredible energy as its complex net of double-crosses and twists unwinds. Starring Brad Pitt, Michael Shannon, Joey King, and more. Scheduled to be released in theaters in July 2022.
