Des Moines Roosevelt High School increases security following shooting at prom after-party

Heightened security measures have been implemented at Des Moines Roosevelt High School following a shooting at a prom after-party in the Linden Heights neighborhood left three students injured over the weekend.

Roosevelt Principal Steve Schappaugh said in an email to parents Sunday that there did not appear to be a threat to the school following the shooting but security was being increased "out of an abundance of caution."

"This was a traumatic event for many students and families. We are being cautious to help provide greater comfort to be able to return to school," Schappaugh wrote.

At 12:23 a.m. on Sunday, Des Moines Police Department Officers responded to a shooting in the 400 block of Foster Drive, according to a news release from Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek.

The three Roosevelt students — a 17-year-old girl and two 18-year-old men — had non-life-threatening gunshot injuries and were taken to Des Moines hospitals, Parizek said. Officers found there were 200 people, mostly teenagers, at the party, Parizek said.

No arrests have been made yet and the case is still under investigation, Parizek said.

On Monday, Schappaugh wrote in another email to parents that there have been Des Moines Police Department and Des Moines Public Schools Public Safety vehicles patrolling on and around campus.

"While there is no threat to Roosevelt we wanted to error on the side of caution with some additional support to monitor the area," Schappaugh wrote.

Counseling has also been offered to students, Schappaugh indicated in his emails.

"There are no words to adequately describe the pain and emotions we are feeling right now. However, I'm confident we will be united in our support of our students," he wrote.

"We're here for you — today, tomorrow, and however we need to be in the coming days."
