Desert Hot Springs Women’s Club awards scholarships to 13 DHS High School students

The Desert Hot Springs Women’s Club (DHSWC) recently announced its 2022 college-bound scholarship recipients from Desert Hot Springs High School. Thirteen scholarships were awarded, totaling $24,500. This includes three $1,000 scholarships for College of the Desert, with one from TKE Engineering going to Vanessa Rocha, who will be studying fashion design.

Recipients Keyanna Session, who will study nursing, and Elizabeth Pugh, who is interested in education, were given $2,000 scholarships. This was given by DHSWC member Shirley Bales in honor of her late husband, who was an educator.

Member Sally Hedberg donated a $2,000 scholarship to Ingrid Solano, who will attend CSU San Bernardino as a psychology major with an emphasis on mental health. April Martinez received a scholarship from money donated by Desert Valley Disposal, totaling $2,500. She will attend UCLA to study medicine.

The remaining scholarships were $2,000 each and went to Kelly Medero, CSU San Diego, business; Janvi Kaushal, CSU San Bernadino, business; Josue Ceja, UC Irvine, environmental studies/history; Natalie Facer, CSU Long Beach, oceanography; Daisy Nayoti, UCLA, biochemistry; Jazmin Moran, CSU San Diego, health education; Kiela Maldonado, CSU San Bernardino, business; and Elisa Rasario, UCLA, medicine.

Nancy Wright chaired the committee, which included Lucy Chapman, Hedberg, Sylvia Rountree, Terri Cook, Jan Pye and Shary McDonald. The committee would like to express its appreciation to Kathy Nollen, DHSHS career counselor, who sent out applications, encouraged the students to apply and set up all the in-person interviews at the high school.

After COVID, it was a joy for the DHSWC scholarship committee to be able to interview the students in person. These scholarships were awarded May 12 at in the DHS High School auditorium.

The Desert Hot Springs Women’s Club was founded in 1953. Since then, the organization has awarded more than $500,000 in scholarships and funds to nine local schools as well as many community organizations.

Sally Hedberg serves on the board of the Desert Hot Springs Women's Club in charge of programs and publicity.
