Desert Mirage volleyball wins first CIF playoff game in school history

Desert Mirage High School made school history Thursday night by winning its first volleyball playoff game in school history.

The Rams went on the road and swept Acaciawood 3-0 in Division 9 behind the strong play from twins Ariana and Viviana Hernandez and Aisha Jawharzai.

Desert Mirage (16-8) will host Marshall (17-8) at 6 p.m. Saturday in the second round.

Desert Christian Academy 3, Elsinore 1: The Conquerors began their chase for a sixth CIF volleyball title with the home victory Thursday night. After dropping the first set 20-25, the Conquerors rebounded to win the next three 25-16, 25-19 and 25-19 to close out the match.

Desert Christian (19-0) travels to Schurr on Saturday.

Twentynine Palms 3, Moreno Valley 0: Twentynine Palms won its CIF Division 8 playoff opener on the road, winning 25-20, 25-21, 25-21.

Anisia Rios had strong serves and played solid defense. Itzel Solorio had eight digs and one diving save to keep the Cats in the rally. Kyla Palpallatoc led the Cats with nine kills, one solo block, one block assist and eight digs. Lexi Hanson had an assisted block and two kills. Gabby Wunderlee had six kills and eight digs. Zemira Mosqueda put up four kills and had five aces. Lindie Stewart had two kills and one ace. Jenica Silvas contributed 16 assists, two aces, three kills and six digs.

Twentynine Palms hosts Ramona Convent on at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Girls' tennis

Palm Desert def. Palm Springs: The Aztecs completed a 15-0 regular season with the victory over Palm Springs on Thursday.

Palm Desert is now ranked No. 1 in CIF Division 2.

Desert Empire League individual play will begin Tuesday at Rancho Mirage High. CIF playoff pairings will be announced Oct. 31.

Shadow Hills def. Rancho Mirage: Shadow Hills and Rancho Mirage played to a 9-9 score, with Shadow Hills winning the match 84-69 after games were totaled.

The Rancho Mirage doubles team of Ariana Parrish and Laylanie Escobar won 6-4, 6-1, 6-1. Brianna Lemus and Isabelle Agriam won their matches 6-2, 6-4, 7-6. Briana Parrish and Parker Merlin picked up a 6-4 win.

Girls' golf

Desert Valley League finals: Three golfers from the desert advanced to the CIF-Southern Section individual preliminaries Wednesday from the individual finals.

Gema Gonzalez and Irene Hernandez of Coachella Valley High School and Monika Aguilar of Indio High School were among the four golfers to advance from the DVL finals at Bear Mountain Golf Course at Big Bear Lake.

Anika Holloway of Big Bear High School won the DVL title with a 27-hole total of 135, a 47 in the nine-hole Tuesday round and an 88 in Wednesday’s 18-hole round.

Gonzalez finished second in the league with a 137 total, 46 on Tuesday and 91 on Wednesday. Gonzalez will return to the CIF-SS preliminaries for the second year in a row. Aguilar will be making her third trip to the CIF postseason after finishing third in league with a 161 total, 56 on Tuesday and 105 on Wednesday. Hernandez grabbed the fourth and final CIF berth from the DVL with a 165 total, 51 on Tuesday and 114 on Wednesday.

The CIF-SS individual preliminaries will be Tuesday at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.
