DEMING – Winds estimated at 45 mph lifted dirt and sand-blasted the Wildcat diamond at Deming High School on Friday evening. The Santa Teresa High Desert Warriors gave a lesson on baseball preparedness in sweeping the host Deming High Wildcats 13-2 and 7-3 in a non-district double header.

Playing through the dust storm, an unfazed Warriors varsity quickly erased a one-run deficit in the first game and rolled to the 11-run victory in six innings. The game was shortened by an inning, via the 10-run rule in New Mexico high school baseball.

Deming (2-2) put up the first run of the day on an RBI double by senior Alan Carreon. Junior Vynny Chavez was issued a one-out walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Carreon’s extra base hit drove home Chavez.

Pitcher Carreon toed the rubber for the ‘Cats and struck out four, walked three, and gave up three runs on two hits in the first two innings of work. The big blow came off the bat of Olvier Alvidrez who touched Carreon for a two-run home run to right-center. The Warriors built a 3-1 cushion and never looked back.

Junior Oscar Garcia came in relief of Carreon to open the third frame and the Warriors greeted him with five runs on three hits to extend their lead to an 8-1 advantage.

Santa T. (3-3) loaded the bases for Alvidrez who belted a double to chase all three runner’s home during the third-inning uprising.

Two more runs came home in the Warriors’ half of the fourth inning. A throwing error brought one run home and Gabriel Heredia’s RBI single pushed the scored to a 10-1 Warriors’ lead.

Sophomore Paul Bourget came on in the fourth to pitch the final three innings.

The ‘Cats scratched out a run in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Kaleb Mendoza led off with a triple and crossed home plate on Garcia’s RBI single.

Leading 10-2, Santa Teresa closed out the contest with three more runs in the top of the sixth. Angel Medrano and Isaiah Gutierrez each had RBI singles. Alvidrez also drove home a run with a fielder’s choice for the 13-2 win.

Alvidrez would finish his first-game damage in Deming on two hits, a run scored, and 5 RBI.

Wildcat pitching was touched for 10 hits. The Warriors were issued 7 walks and the Deming defense committed four fielding errors. They compounded their problems on the base paths when two runners were picked off.

The ‘Cats collected six hits and struck out 10 times. Senior Richard Ramirez went 3-for-3, with a double and two singles.

Santa Teresa completed the sweep with a 7-3 win in the nightcap game.

The ‘Cats will go on the road Tuesday and play a single game at Bayard Cobre High. Game time is at 6 p.m.
