Desert weather: Chance of light showers tonight, Sunday

Despite the cloudy skies, only a slight chance of rainfall is expected through the night across the Coachella Valley.

"The area might get a few sprinkles, potentially some showers coming across on the desert floor," National Weather Service meteorologist Samantha Connelly said around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The NWS website adds there is just a 20% chance of precipitation in the area Saturday night and Sunday with breezy to windy conditions.

Up in the mountains, however, light rainfall and thunderstorms are likely.

"We're expecting showers and thunderstorms in the Riverside County mountains later this evening," Connelly said. "Overall, we're looking at totals of a couple tenths of an inch, maybe a little more."

The National Weather service is predicting an unseasonably mild day on Sunday, with temperatures only expected to hit 81 degrees in the Palm Springs area.
