Telling identical twin babies apart can be tricky for even the most eagle-eyed of parents, but tattooing one of them so you can spot the difference seems somewhat on the extreme side. But there is a very good reason one father is considering it.

Taking to Reddit, the desperate dad, known only as Thrwydad, revealed there is a medical issue behind the need to tell his twins apart and appealed to parents for suggestions about solving the problem.

The 12-month-old boys, Adam and Aaron, are identical in every way, except for the fact that Aaron has very serious health issues, which require him to have medication every four hours. And spotting who’s who could well be a matter of life and death.

The boys’ parents had been using a permanent marker to identify each twin, but explaining about a terrifying incident where the marker rubbed off in the bath and their grandma accidentally gave Aaron’s medication to Adam, leading to hospitalisation for Adam and illness for Aaron, the concerned dad turned to the internet for suggestions of a more permanent solution.

“This is a serious extreme situation and I don’t want to take this risk again,” the dad wrote. “We have had other mix-ups with the boys but it has never wound up this bad.”

Explaining that they had tried other fixes such as nail-polish, bracelets, anklets, specific coloured clothes and shaving one baby’s head, the dad went on to say that none of them were completely fool-proof.

“I read online about someone tattooing a single dot on one of their twins and also about piercing ears. I really hate to say it but we are here,” the dad continued.

“I need to do something permanent. I could have lost both my sons last weekend and I’m desperate. I am only after permanent solutions. Believe me when I say we have tried everything else before and it didn’t work. Please help me. I don’t want to lose my boy.”

Reddit users were divided over whether piercing or tattooing was a better solution, with some saying a little dot would do the job and look just like a freckle while others argued that ear piercing was the better, more simple option.
