Desperate for help, Humane Society takes in 128 animals after 2 dog raids in 2 weeks

The Humane Society of South Mississippi is desperate for the community’s help after taking 128 animals in the last two weeks from Mississippi Coast hoarding and court seizure cases.

The most recent animal abuse case occurred in Pass Christian on Thursday, when HSSM and multiple law enforcement agencies raided a home and rescued 69 dogs and one cat.

The couple who lives at the home were arrested Friday and charged with 70 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty.

Several of the dogs are pregnant, HSSM said on Facebook, with one giving birth to nine puppies on Friday morning at the Gulfport shelter.

In addition, HSSM’s team seized 11 chihuahuas in another hoarding case today.

“It is disheartening that this horrendous neglect and abuse continues happening right in our own community,” the Humane Society said in their Facebook post.

The chihuahuas will be available for adoption on Saturday.

Already dealing with overcrowding, HSSM is trying to raise $50,000 to retrofit an on-site warehouse to house an additional 24 large dogs. If they raise the money, an anonymous donor will match it.

“With the number of animals coming in, there is no doubt that this is desperately needed.” HSSM said.

Those interesting in donating can call the animal shelter at 228-822-3802.

HSSM is also asking for donations, including dog bowls, dog food, towels, rags and cleaning supplies to help care for the influx of animals.

Eleven chihuahuas were seized by the Humane Society of South Mississippi on Friday, March 11, 2022, after two dog raids in two weeks.
