On March 25, Bindi Irwin said “I do” to now-husband Chandler Powell, but the moment almost didn’t happen. In the face of the coronavirus pandemic, Irwin and Powell had to make a last-minute call to either roll with a revised wedding plan or postpone their nuptials. So, they improvised — and now the couple is opening up about what their “whirlwind of a day” looked like, and taking fans inside of her wedding.

By the time the novel coronavirus reached Australia and safety protocols began being implemented, Irwin and Powell’s wedding was mere weeks away. They were set to walk down a makeshift aisle at the Irwin family’s beloved Australia Zoo on April 4. “We had been planning for almost a year, but as soon as all of this started happening, we had to look at different options to make sure everyone was safe,” Irwin told People.

So, for the greater good, the pair pushed their date up and got hitched almost two weeks early. The guest list? Well, it had been whittled down to Irwin’s mom Terri and brother Robert, her late dad’s best friend Wes Mannion, and “lots of animals.” Said Irwin, “It was a tough decision but absolutely the right one.”

Fortunately for the original wedding guests (and the rest of us), we’ll still be able to celebrate the couple’s big day in a big way. It’s the Irwins: Bindi’s Wedding Special will air April 18 at 8 p.m. ET on Animal Planet.

And what Irwin hopes people will be able to see is that, despite having to turn their plans upside down, they wouldn’t change a thing. “Even if it wasn’t by-the-book perfect, it was our perfect,” shared Irwin. Her new husband adorably agreed, gushing, “The first time I saw Bindi in that dress was the more beautiful sight in the world. I immediately teared up. Nothing has ever felt more right than that moment in time.”

It was a tumultuous situation, but ultimately one that worked out well in the end. “We thought about postponing, because you want to share this day with everyone, but when it boiled down to it, we both just said, ‘Look, we desperately want to get married, and no matter what the future holds, at least we’ll be husband and wife. We can take on the world together,” said Irwin.

She added, “These last few days have been amazing reflecting on our whirlwind of a day and also looking forward to the future. My dad would be so happy.”
