New details from East Side house party shooting: Suspect dragged out of bar after arrest

An 18-year-old man rushed his friend to a hospital after he shot him and another person at an East El Paso house party, while another suspect fled and was dragged out of a bar by police, court documents state.

Alan Villanueva, 18, and Luis Ruiz, 19, were arrested in connection with the Sept. 3 house party shooting at a home in the 10900 block of Gary Player Drive near Lee Trevino and Vista Del Sol drives.

Villanueva was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Ruiz was arrested in connection with one count of evading arrest or detention and resisting arrest, search or transport.

Villanueva and a group of friends went to the house party at 1:23 a.m., where a large crowd was present. A fight started about 1:30 a.m. at the party.

Villanueva then allegedly fired multiple gunshots, striking a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, the affidavit and police said.

El Paso Police Department officers responded to the scene and found a crowd of people fleeing the house, police said.

Officers then found the 20-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in the backyard, the affidavit states. The man was taken to Del Sol Medical Center and rushed into surgery.

The man was later admitted into the intensive care unit in critical condition. His current condition was not released.

An investigation revealed a 17-year-old boy was also shot in the incident. The 17-year-old boy was taken to a Del Sol Medical Center by people attending the party.

Officers found bullet casings in the backyard and later found a 9mm Ruger handgun, which had been thrown into a desert area directly behind the house, the affidavit states.

Witnesses told officers a man wearing a black hoodie with a black facemask was seen holding a handgun at the time of the shooting.

Officers obtained surveillance video from the backyard of the house. In the video, the man with the black hoodie and mask, the 17-year-old boy and other people are shown arriving at the house, the affidavit states.

The man matching the witness description was wearing a black hoodie with "POLO" written in red and a "black ski-mask style face mask," the affidavit states.

Officers identified the man as Villanueva through the video and witness statements, the affidavit states.

The officers then viewed surveillance video from Del Sol Medical Center. The footage showed the 17-year-old boy and four other people being dropped off at the hospital's entrance about 1:39 a.m. in an older model silver GMC Yukon, the affidavit states.

The Yukon then drives away from the Del Sol Medical Center as the victim is brought into the hospital.

After the victim is taken into the emergency room, the other four people run away from the hospital, the affidavit states.

An investigation revealed Villanueva had a "citation history" in a 2009 GMC Yukon, the affidavit states. The car was registered under his mother's name.

Officers conducted surveillance of the mother's home and found the Yukon parked outside her house. The Yukon matched the vehicle which fled the hospital, the affidavit states.

Villanueva was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked Oct. 6 into the El Paso County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

He also was arrested in connection with bond violations stemming from a January arrest, jail records show.

Villanueva remains jailed as of Friday, Oct. 26, jail logs show.

Ruiz arrested, dragged out of East Side bar

An officer saw a black Dodge Challenger about 1:50 a.m. the night of the shooting driving at a high rate of speed on Vista Del Sol Drive, an affidavit filed against Ruiz states.

The officer then reported the vehicle over the police radio, saying the people in the car matched the description of suspects involved in the house party shooting and another shooting in the 3200 block of Shetland Road near Album Park, the affidavit states.

No other information was released on the Shetland Road shooting.

The officer chased the car but lost it near the intersection of Lee Trevino and Vista Del Sol drives. Officers then began canvassing the area for the vehicle.

Other officers then found and began chasing the car in the 1500 block of Lee Trevino Drive. The driver then turned into a Circle K convenience store and hid the vehicle behind the building, the affidavit states.

Officers spoke with security officers who said the people in the car got out and ran toward 99 Problems Bar and Coco Bar. The officer drove toward Coco Bar, where he spotted Ruiz trying to hide in between vehicles, the affidavit states.

Ruiz then crawled under the patio area of Coco Bar and jumped a fence into the patio. The officer then jumped the fence and told Ruiz to "get on the (expletive) ground," the affidavit states.

Ruiz allegedly ignored the officer, pushed his way past a crowd and attempted to hide near the bar counter.

The officer approached Ruiz with his gun drawn because Ruiz was "possibly armed with the weapon used in the shooting," the affidavit states.

The officer holstered the gun, grabbed Ruiz and pulled him to the ground. Ruiz allegedly put his hands in front of him to try to stop the officer from arresting him, the affidavit states.

He then grabbed Ruiz by the collarbone area and attempted to turn Ruiz over on his stomach to place him in handcuffs. Ruiz allegedly continued to resist, but the officer was eventually able to arrest him.

Ruiz allegedly refused to walk, so the officer dragged him out of the crowd, the affidavit states. Ruiz then agreed to walk after he was pulled from the crowd.

The officer suffered an injury to the hand during the incident.

Ruiz was arrested in connection with one count of evading arrest or detention and resisting arrest, search or transport.

He was booked Sept. 3 into the El Paso County Jail on a bond totaling $7,500. He was released from jail the following day after posting bail, jail logs show.
