PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Authorities are sharing new details of the events that led five Clark County deputies to shoot and kill a man during a welfare check on Tuesday.

According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the deputies shot the man after he “produced what appeared to be a firearm” after holding a woman against her will at 12500 Northeast 152nd Avenue. An update from the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has now identified the man as 53-year-old Jonathan Gale, who died from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

An original statement from the sheriff’s office said a woman called 911 saying “she was concerned for her mother’s safety.” On Friday, the Vancouver Police Department – now in charge of investigating the case – shared the following update:

“Upon arrival, deputies learned from a female at the location that she was being held against her will and had been sexually assaulted by the male at the residence, who she said was in possession of a firearm. As deputies attempted to detain the male, there was a use of force resulting in an officer-involved shooting.”

The man was critically injured and died at the scene. Vancouver police say authorities “found firearms in close proximity” to his body.

Meanwhile, the five deputies have been placed on leave, which is standard protocol. Body camera footage is expected to be released later on.

The female victim was taken to the hospital for an evaluation, and officials have yet to give an update on her progress.

Home records show the address is owned by a husband and a wife, who both appear to run businesses out of the property – including a hypnosis center and a counseling service, according to their business website.
