Details of Tony Sanchez’s contract as the head football coach at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) – New Mexico State will pay first-year head football coach Tony Sanchez $600,000 in the first year of his five-year contract with the Aggies, according to his newly-minted contract, which KTSM obtained on Wednesday.

Sanchez’s salary will increase by $25,000 each year of the five-year deal, culminating in a $700,000 annual salary in 2028, the final year of the deal. The contract automatically extends for one season upon qualifying for a bowl game during the 2024, 2025 and 2026 seasons.

As with all contracts, Sanchez’s deal also comes with a variety of incentive bonuses. Sanchez would receive $20,000 for winning six games or going to a bowl game; $25,000 for seven wins; $30,000 for eight wins; and $35,000 for 9-12 wins.

He would also get $10,000 each for wins over New Mexico and UTEP, plus $10,000 for being named Conference USA coach of the year. He also would receive $25,000 for a win over a Power-5 team.

The contract is similar to the original contract signed by former NMSU head coach Jerry Kill, who retired two days before Christmas, resulting in Sanchez’s promotion from wide receivers coach.

As far as a buyout for Sanchez, it’s $1 million in 2024, $700,000 in 2025, $400,000 in 2026, $200,000 in 2027 and $0 in 2028. Additionally, if NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia leaves his post for any reason and NMSU Chief Operating Officer Braun Cartwright is not promoted to athletic director, then the buyout will be voided.
