Detectives: Credit card skimmers found on registers at local Walmart stores

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Detectives from several Northeast Ohio communities are investigating reports of credit card skimmers found on cash registers at Walmart stores in the area.
Cleveland police are looking for two suspects that investigators say placed a credit card skimmer on a self-checkout register at the Walmart at 3400 Steelyard Drive on Dec. 16.
The Second District Community Relations Committee released photos of the suspects on social media.

Customer shot in robbery at Northeast Ohio Subway
Investigators say similar cases have been reported at Walmart stores in Parma, North Olmsted, Brooklyn and South Euclid.
According to a Parma police report, officers were called to the Walmart at 8303 W. Ridgewood Drive on Jan. 7 after a worker found a card skimmer on one of the self-checkout registers.
The skimmer “appeared to be a false keypad that fit over the actual keypad to the payment terminal,” the report said.

Investigators say surveillance footage showed two well-dressed men with beards and surgical masks installing the skimmer around 3:09 p.m. on Dec. 16 before leaving the store and riding off on electric scooters.
A Walmart spokesperson released the following statement:
“Providing customers with a safe shopping experience is a top priority. We’re continually reviewing protocols and adding enhanced security measures to better protect in-store transactions. Also, this situation remains an ongoing criminal investigation, and we’re actively engaged with law enforcement.”
As FOX 8 previously reported, Giant Eagle has been warning customers recently after credit card skimmers were found in multiple local stores.
