Detectives investigating man’s death as homicide at south Sacramento apartment complex

Detectives were investigating a shooting that killed a man near a south Sacramento apartment complex — the third homicide sheriff’s officials have responded to in a span of two days.

Shortly before 3 p.m., deputies were called to an apartment complex in the 7400 block of La Mancha Way, just west of Highway 99 and north of Pomegranate Avenue.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, a Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesman, said a man and his girlfriend were experiencing homelessness and living near Jack N. Sheldon Park just east of Highway 99. There’s a tunnel underneath the highway that runs from the park to the neighborhood along La Mancha.

The girlfriend, seeking help, told a resident at the apartment complex on La Mancha that a shooting had occurred. Gandhi said deputies arrived and found her boyfriend wounded by gunfire near the apartment complex.

Deputies performed life-saving measures until medics arrived, Gandhi said. The medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

On Friday, Gandhi said the victim and his girlfriend had been arguing with each other before the fatal shooting occurred. The sheriff’s spokesman said investigators questioned the girlfriend, and she is not considered a suspect in the shooting.

Gandhi said it’s unclear where the couple’s argument had anything to do with the shooting, and there was no suspect information to release. Detectives were seeking the public’s help as they continued to search for security camera video or witnesses that might help with the homicide investigation.

There was no indication Thursday’s homicide was related to the two shootings that occurred the previous day.

On Wednesday morning, a man was found dead with at least one gunshot wound at a home in the 5200 block of Kenneth Avenue in Fair Oaks. His two roommates, a mother and her adult son, were arrested in connection with the man’s death.

Another man was shot in the neck Wednesday afternoon during an apparent dispute in the 9000 block of Alder Avenue in Sacramento County’s Vineyard neighborhood. No arrests have been made, and no suspect information has been released.

Detectives ask anyone with information about Thursday’s fatal shooting to call the Sheriff’s Office at 916-874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357.
