Detours expected in Bellefonte for wall repairs on South Water Street, months after collapse

Months after a wall collapsed on South Water Street in Bellefonte, repairs are planned to start next week.

The wall repair on South Water Street — also known as State Route 150 — will begin April 4, a spokesperson from the state department of transportation said. The project is estimated to be complete by Aug. 7, according to a Facebook post by the Bellefonte Borough.

Some detours will be in place during construction. Northbound traffic will be detoured at Stoney Batter Road and will use Route 144 to High Street, returning to SR 150.

Southbound traffic (traffic heading toward State College) will still travel through the impacted area in the northbound lane, the post states. Drivers should be prepared for a potential 15-minute traffic delay as needed.

The contractor of the project is HRI, Inc. and it was bid at $393,215, PennDOT said.

The wall collapsed in November 2022 after a significant amount of rain from Hurricane Nicole hit the area. At the time, PennDOT said it was still under investigation but that early indicators pointed to the rain as a contributing factor. Temporary repairs to the wall were done in early December at an estimated cost of $50,000.
