Detroit area man dies in motorcycle crash, possibly caused by wind

Gusting wind might have contributed to the motorcycle crash that killed Richard Karmin, 45, of Trenton, Friday on U.S. 12.

Before 4 p.m., a witness in the vehicle following the eastbound motorcycle said it appeared Karmin was blown into the eastbound lane just east of Batavia Road and lost control.

National Weather Service reported wind gusts to 26 mph at the time of the crash.

The driver of a westbound pickup said Karmin was not in control as he rode over the center line. The bike hit the left rear quarter panel of the truck.

The Wayne County man was flung to the road as the cycle tore off parts of the rear bumper. The motorcycle continued for 30 more feet into the grassy ditch on the north side of the road.

Bronson Fire medical first-responders and LifeCare ambulance workers performed CPR and used other medical procedures to try to revive him.

AirCare was placed on standby but canceled when Karmin did not respond. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Branch County Sheriff deputies closed U.S. 12 between Batavia and Wheeler roads  with road commission barricades for several hours while crash-reconstruction investigators worked. Michigan State Police assisted.

The driver of the pickup truck was treated at the scene for bruises he suffered on his left arm.

Michigan State Police trooper Alan Fouty and Branch County deputy Doug Pope examine the truck struck by the motorcycle ridden by a Detroit-area man on U.S. 12. Wind gusts of 26 mph may have contributed to the fatal crash.
