Detroit Lions rookie Aidan Hutchinson gets three sacks in first half vs. Commanders

So, that's why the Detroit Lions drafted Aidan Hutchinson with the No. 2 overall pick in April's NFL draft.

The former Michigan football star, who had a rough outing in his debut in Week 1 against the Eagles with just one tackle, feasted in the first half against the Commanders.

Hutchinson sacked Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz three times in the first two quarters. No Lions rookie had ever recorded three sacks in a full game, according to the team.

"I think it’s just knowing when you got your opportunity you’ve got to make it, but when it’s not yours, you try to force it, sometimes not good things happen," Hutchinson said earlier in the week of what he learned in the opener. "And I think that’s kind of my mentality is when I have an opportunity, I bet on myself to make it."

The first sack came on Washington's first drive of the game. On third-and-4, Hutchinson came around the Commanders' left tackle, forced Wentz to climb in the pocket before Hutchinson caught him from behind.

Early in the second quarter, Hutchinson was back at it again, this time working against Sam Cosmi.

Hutchinson bull-rushed the right tackle, forced Wentz to begin to roll left and Hutchinson just kept working around the tackle before he dropped Washington's first-year quarterback for another loss.

On his third sack, Hutchinson was lined up on the interior of the line. The rookie ran a stunt with John Cominsky — who drew a double team, which allowed Hutchinson to blow through the opening in the middle of the line and slam Wentz to the turf.

Hutchinson led the Lions at the half with six combined tackles (five solo), including three sacks for a loss of 15 yards. The constant pressure from Hutchinson and the Lions defense caused fits for the Commanders offense.

Wentz completed just 9-of-17 passes for 59 yards and the team had just six rushes for another 17 yards.

Charles Harris also had a strip-sack of Wentz in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter.

However, Fox sideline reporter Shannon Spake reported that Hutchinson seemed to be struggling with his right leg during the second-half warmups. He was shown on Fox cameras first hobbling back to the locker room before seemingly limping back to the sideline.
