Detroit Mercy Titans men's basketball adds 2 transfers, 2 freshmen

Detroit Mercy men's basketball announced Tuesday the addition of two transfers and two freshmen to its 2022-23 roster.

Former Loyola-Chicago guard/forward Damezi Anderson and former Grand Canyon guard Jayden Stone are the new transfers. Guard/forward Isaiah Jones and guard Marcus Tankersley are the incoming freshmen.

"These guys are just the start of our roster that we are putting together," head coach Mike Davis said in a press release. "We have a couple of guys who have competed at the Division I level and should be able to compete right away and a couple of freshmen who have some good talent, size and skills that they can continue to develop."

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Anderson arrives as a graduate transfer with two years of remaining eligibility after he didn't appear in a game for Loyola-Chicago last season. Prior to joining the Ramblers, he played in 39 games in two seasons at Indiana, averaging 2.1 points and 1.6 rebounds. In high school, he was the No. 2 player in Indiana and No. 92 nationally, per 247Sports.

Stone, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound junior, played 30 games for GCU the past two seasons, averaging 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds, with 25 assists to 16 turnovers. He shot 39.3% from the field and 82.1% at the free-throw line. He was a McDonald's All-American nominee in his high school senior season at Sunrise Christian Academy in Kansas.

Jones comes from Speights Academy in Florida, where he averaged 16 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists as a junior. The 6-8, 209-pounder made the first team at the Prep Nationals Post Grand SLAM All-Stars showcase, an event held in Rock Hill, South Carolina last March.

Tankersley, from Veritas Academy in Florida, scored a career-high 38 points as a senior and was named second-team All-State. He also helped his team to a state title in 2020. His high school coach, Rod Wilmont, played for Mike Davis at Indiana from 2003-06.

Detroit Mercy's new quartet joins three-star Cleveland, Ohio guard Sonny Johnson, who signed with the Titans in November. Additionally, guard Jamail Pink, who played his first two seasons at Detroit Mercy, has transferred back to the program.

The Titans went 14-16 last season (10-7 Horizon League), playing well at home (9-1) while struggling with a road-heavy schedule (5-15). But for a fifth season, they bring back coach's son and guard Antoine Davis, who averaged 23.9 points last season, is the program's all-time points leader and is 22nd in NCAA history in scoring.
