Detroit pot dispensary giving free joints to people who receive COVID vaccine

Residents of the Wolverine state will soon be able to puff and puff if they don’t pass up the chance to receive a COVID vaccination.

On Monday, Greenhouse of Walled Lake, a northwest suburb of Detroit, a marijuana dispensary, announced “Pot for Shots,” a program where people who get their first dose can get a free pre-rolled joint from the store.

“Our goal is to raise awareness of the importance of getting the COVID-19 vaccination as we as a community battle this horrible pandemic,” owner Jerry Millen says in a statement, according to Metro Times. “‘Pot for Shots’ is our way of showing our commitment in assisting helping the community get back to normalcy. We support the safe and responsible use of cannabis and hope this is the beginning of the end of this insidious pandemic.”

The new, more-contagious UK variant was recently discovered in Michigan.

The promotion comes as the country experiences a delayed rollout of its already minimal number of doses to eligible recipients. Michigan has so far distributed more than 1 million doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines. Oakland County, which includes Walled Lake, is one of the most vaccinated counties in the Wolverine State, according to Michigan’s coronavirus dashboard.

Michigan legalized recreational marijuana in 2018 with sales beginning the following year. It was the first Midwest state to approve recreational cannabis use.

The promotion at Greenhouse will run from Jan. 22 until Feb. 28.
