Game notes: We’re not guaranteeing anything, but if you have plans for immediately after tonight’s game, you might want to build in 10-15 minutes of wiggle room. The Stars are still in the running in the Central Division — they’re two points back of Colorado with three games to play — thanks to 22 of their 79 games going to overtime, and their inability to finish those off. That includes 14 OT or shootout losses, four OT wins and four SO wins, for a total of 30 “extra” points this season. Then again, their prime competition in the Central, Colorado (6 OT/SO losses, eight OT wins and six SO wins) and the Minnesota Wild (10 OT/SO losses, five OT wins and seven SO wins), meanwhile, have picked up 34 points apiece in the extra sessions, so maybe it all (nearly) balances out. (The Wings, in case you were wondering, have nabbed 24 points — 10 OT/SO losses, four OT wins and three SO wins — in 17 games with an OT frame.)
Only one of those OT wins by the Stars have come on the stick of fourth-year Stars star Jason Robertson this season — a goal with 13 seconds left before a shootout against the Flames back on March 18 in Calgary. Not that a lack of OT success has slowed down the former Little Caesars juniors player. The 23-year-old, who finished second in Calder Trophy voting in 2020 (just ahead of future Wings goalie Alex Nedeljkovic), has 45 goals and 58 assists in all this season. Those 103 points are the most by a Stars star since the franchise moved to Dallas for 1993-94, a span of 29 seasons (and yes, that includes most of Westland product Mlke Modano’s time in black, green and gold/silver). The franchise’s scoring record islikely out of reach — Bobby Smith had 114 points in 1981-82 — but “Robo” could cop No. 2 on the list with four more points. That would put him at 107, one more than former Red Wing Dino Ciccarelli (106 in 1981-82) and two up on former Team USA star Neal Broten (105 in 1985-86).
Robertson picked up a point the last time these teams met, on Dec. 10, assisting on a power-play score by captain Jamie Benn — who, we’ll remind you, has a habit of delivering dirty hits against Wings captain Dylan Larkin — with four minutes remaining in regulation. But Detroit’s David Perron (who enters Monday with points in nine of his past 11 games) knotted it at 2-2 with a minute to go, sending it into, of course, OT. They didn’t get to a shootout, however, as Nils Lundkvist beat Ville Husso with 31 seconds left in OT after a turnover in the neutral zone turned into a two-on-one.
Even if tonight’s game goes into an extra frame, it’ll still wrap up the Wings’ home slate. They won’t have much time to rest, however, with a Tuesday-night date with Carolina coming home, followed by the season finale against Tampa Bay on Thursday. The Stars, meanwhile, get Tuesday off, then finish with a home-and-home on Wednesday and Thursday against St. Louis.
