BOX SCORE

Game notes: Hey, didn’t we just see these guys? Yes, the Wings take on the Senators again, thanks to a December storm that pushed the teams' first game in Ottawa to Monday night. Gee, a sequel featuring a bunch of guys wearing red and black? Is this a hockey game, or "Deadpool 3?" (Trick question, since both feature Ryan Reynolds, the Canadian-born star of "Deadpoool" as well as the hopeful buyer of the up-for-sale Ottawa franchise.) Detroit jumped out to a 2-1 lead on Monday night, then got slammed by five unanswered goals in a 6-2 loss.

The Sens are sitting at the back of the pack of Eastern wild-card contenders, not out of it, but needing a run to get toward the top; they’re 5-3-1 this month with wins over rebuilding teams such as the Blues and Canadiens and losses to good teams such as the Bruins and Hurricanes. It’s not quite where the Sens thought they'd be after an offseason when they went all-in, dealing for Farmington Hills’ Alex DeBrincat and signing veteran forward Claude Giroux, though it’s tough to argue those moves haven’t paid off.

DeBrincat, the diminutive sniper who spent his first five seasons with Chicago, has 19 goals and 31 assists, putting him on pace for 69 points — the third-best total of his career, but well off his 41 goals and 78 points last season. He and Giroux have served as solid complements to the core two: Captain Brady Tkachuk (25 goals, 37 assists) and German forward Tim Stützle (27 goals, 33 assists).

After their back-to-back against the Sens, the Wings return home for a single game, hosting the second-year Seattle Kraken on Thursday night before heading back on the road for another back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday. (That one, at least, is against different teams, as the Wings visit the Islanders in New York on Saturday and the Flyers in Philadelphia on Sunday. Wonder if they’ll take the train in between?) The Senators, meanwhile, head to New York to take on the Rangers on Thursday night.
