Cremona, Italy, native Jader Bignamini is making his Detroit Symphony Orchestra conducting debut this month at the DSO's William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series. One of his first performances will take place at 8 p.m. May 12 in the Meyer Theater, La-Z-Boy Center at Monroe County Community College, 1555 S. Raisinville Road.

In a video on the DSO's website, Bignamini said the performance will showcase works by three composers and will have a “big and sparkling, majestic finale.”

The program will open with “Overture toIl Diavolo Della Nottby Giovanni Bottesini, who also is a native of Cremona. Then, Italian violinist Giuseppe Gibboni will be the featured soloist for Paganini’s “Violin Concerto No. 1.”

The Paganini selection, the DSO said, “is a showcase of technical prowess for the soloist, complete with the orchestra’s echoes of a military band.”

Gibboni won the 56th Paganini Competition in 2021 and was the first Italian in 24 years to receive the honor.

The program will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s suite from “Swan Lake.” The famed piece has been described as "haunting” and is a ballet about a princess turned into a swan by a sorcerer.

“The second half of the concert is ‘Swan Lake.’ This is one of the most famous melodies. All of you know this melody,” Bignamini said in the video.

The William Davidson Neighborhood Series Concerts brings the DSO to neighboring cities. Other stops in the series this year are in Southfield and Beverly Hills. The final DSO concert at MCCC for the season is June 16.

Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 each for children. For tickets, call the DSO Box Office at 313-576-5111 or visit dso.org.
