Game notes: For a team that’s rebuilding, the Tigers don’t have a lot of open competitions in camp. In fact, they started the spring with the rotation — usually the bane of a retooling club’s existence — virtually set, with Eduardo Rodriguez, Matthew Boyd, Michael Lorenzen, Spencer Turnbull and Matt Manning penciled in to start.

Just one problem: Manning has been pretty awful in his first three starts of the spring. He gave up one run in two innings (against the nominally bad Pittsburgh Pirates) first time out, then gave up as many runs (four) as batters retired (four) against the Red Sox on March 6 (though he finished the outing with a scoreless second inning) and then followed that with five runs allowed over three innings against the Atlanta Braves on Saturday. His prime competition, left-hander Joey Wentz, has been far from perfect this spring, so Manning’s not necessarily pitching for a roster spot against the Yankees today … but a couple of scoreless innings, and an effective slider, would probably go a long way toward settling the questions.

The Yankees, meanwhile, will send right-hander Domingo Germán to the mound; his ERA is a bit high considering how dominant he has been this spring; in 7 2/3 innings over three starts, he has 10 strikeouts, one walk and five hits allowed. Germán was far from a strikeout machine in his injury-shortened 2022, with just 58 in 72 1/3 innings, so perhaps he’s finally rediscovering the form that led him to post 153 strikeouts in 143 innings while going 18-4 in 2019.

After Friday’s game, the Tigers head to Jupiter to take on the St. Louis Cardinals in the start of a two-game road trip. The Yankees, meanwhile, return to the Tampa Bay area to face the Blue Jays in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon.
