The Detroit Tigers made an unexpected change after batting in the top of the first inning, scratching right-hander Julio Teheran from what would have been his second start of the season Friday night at Cleveland.
During Teheran's normal throwing progression leading up to the game, the 30-year-old felt tightness in his triceps, the team announced. He was shut down for precautionary reasons.
Left-hander Derek Holland received the start against Cleveland at Progressive Field in Teheran's place.
Although Holland made the Tigers' 26-man roster as a reliever, he has experience as a starting pitcher.
Across his 13-year MLB career, Holland started 227 of his 309 games entering Friday's contest. He previously played for the Texas Rangers (2009-16), Chicago White Sox (2017), San Francisco Giants (2018-19), Chicago Cubs (2019) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2020).
The 34-year-old has a 15.43 ERA, three walks and three strikeouts in 2⅓ innings this season.
