Detroit Tigers prospect Franklin Perez injured with right shoulder capsule defect

Detroit Tigers right-hander Franklin Perez is battling another injury.

The 23-year-old, acquired as the centerpiece in the 2017 Justin Verlander trade, has been placed on the injured list with High-A West Michigan, the organization announced Tuesday. He has a right shoulder capsule defect and is scheduled to see Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Since he was traded to the Tigers, Perez has only appeared in 27 innings across nine games.

A right lat strain in March 2018 kept him from pitching until June. Then, right shoulder capsular inflammation shut him down after seven starts and 19⅓ innings with a 6.52 ERA. In 2019, right shoulder tendinitis limited him two starts. He had a 2.35 ERA that year in 7⅔ innings. The minor leagues were canceled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Outfielder Daz Cameron, a 24-year-old prospect, is starting with Triple-A Toledo on the seven-day injured list. He is dealing with a fractured right wrist.
