Game notes: The Tigers' original listed starter, Matthew Boyd, was scheduled to pitch 5-6 innings, but has since been replaced by Tyler Alexander. Boyd, who in his last outing allowed three runs over four innings March 18, is not injured, according to manager A.J. Hinch, but is getting extra rest. On the other side, Kevin Gausman was an unexpected scratch by the Blue Jays, for undisclosed reasons. Starting instead is Sem Robberse, a Dutch 21-year-old who posted a 3.65 ERA in five Double-A starts last season.
The Tigers have just one more Grapefruit League game left, with a visit from Tampa Bay coming Sunday afternoon. They’ll then open the 2023 season against the Rays in St. Petersburg on Thursday. The Jays, meanwhile, visit the Yankees in Tampa on Sunday, then have a home-and-home against the Phillies on Monday and Tuesday, before opening the season in St. Louis against the Cardinals.
