Detroit watchmaker, Shinola, to open first new store since COVID-19 pandemic

Shinola, a Detroit-based watchmaker, announced Wednesday it plans to open a new store in downtown Grand Rapids in November, in time for Black Friday, the traditional start of the Christmas shopping season.

The company did not give a specific date.

"We’re interested in creating timeless experiences with Grand Rapids community partners," Shinola CEO Awenate Cobbina said, adding that the location makes sense for the retailer because of the area’s "walkability and vibrancy."

The downtown shop at 40 Monroe Center St. in the Peck Building is the second location on the west side of the state. The other is an outlet center in Byron Center, just south of Grand Rapids.

The new location, the company said, is set to open 10 years after the brand started and is expected to be the 23rd Shinola store in America. It's also the first Shinola shop to open since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opening coincides with a promotional event nationwide called "Thank You, Tenfold." The event, which runs through Dec. 17, offers a variety of deals and special merchandise.
