This week marked 30 years since Hurricane Andrew slammed South Florida.

However, building experts say damage from the storm created a silver lining.

Because of Hurricane Andrew, builders learned just how vulnerable Florida’s buildings were to major storms.

Home builders and inspectors have since strengthened construction practices to prepare for hurricanes.

Officials said every dollar put into strengthening and meeting code to upgrade homes saves four to six times in rebuilding costs from storm damage.

And after Hurricane Andrew, Florida put in place one of the best building codes in the country.
