Zoning board greenlights Popeyes location at vacant Lincoln Plaza building

WORCESTER — A developer's request to rebuild at the Lincoln Plaza location where a 5 & Diner restaurant once stood and build a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant was approved Monday by the Worcester Zoning Board of Appeals.

The Parikh Network, a New Jersey-based developer, is looking to raze the vintage-looking 2006 building which has remained vacant since its original occupant 5 & Diner restaurant, a 1950s-style chain, closed in 2012.

Monday, the Worcester Zoning Board of Appeals approved the developer’s request for a special use permit for a food service establishment with a drive-thru.

The developers also intend to reduce the parking from the 43 spaces that are available to 27, a request which was also approved Monday.

The location at 525 Lincoln St. would be the second drive-thru Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in the city, with another on Park Avenue that opened in 2015.

This location would also be an additional fried chicken chain on Lincoln Street, with KFC and Crown Fried Chicken just down the street.
