Paul Pelosi, the 82-year-old husband of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was violently attacked inside the couple's San Francisco home by an intruder Friday morning.

Nancy Pelosi's spokesperson, Drew Hammill, issued a statement Friday morning confirming the incident.

"Early this morning, an assailant broke into the Pelosi residence in San Francisco and violently assaulted Mr. Pelosi," the statement reads.

"The assailant is in custody and the motivation for the attack is under investigation," the statement continues. "Mr. Pelosi was taken to the hospital, where he is receiving excellent medical care and is expected to make a full recovery."

Speaker Pelosi was not at home at the time of the intrusion and attack.

President Joe Biden spoke with the Speaker of the House this morning, according to a statement by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

"The President is praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s whole family," Jean-Pierre wrote. "This morning he called Speaker Pelosi to express his support after this horrible attack. He is also very glad that a full recovery is expected. The President continues to condemn all violence, and asks that the family’s desire for privacy be respected."

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has also spoken with Pelosi.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Capitol Police are working with San Francisco Police Department officials investigating the case.
