Development planned at interchange

Nov. 15—HIGH POINT — A self-storage facility is the initial use proposed for a north High Point highway interchange property, according to development plans filed with the city.

A site plan submitted by a local engineering consultant now under review by city planners proposes a two-floor, 69,000-square-foot, climate-controlled storage building at 6531 Old Plank Road.

No specifics about the project, such as the developer, the name of the proposed facility or its operator, were included in the submission to the city.

The owner of the 16.25-acre site is a limited liability company with an Austin, Texas, address. It purchased the property earlier this year for $1.2 million from a family partnership called Hedgecock Holdings LLC.

The Texas LLC's other holdings in High Point include the Quality Self Storage property on N. Main Street. It also sold the adjoining lot for the Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant.

Located just off Interstate 74 at U.S. 311, the Old Plank Road site is directly across from a Starbucks, a McDonald's and a Sheetz gas station and convenience store.

It's undeveloped except for a former Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation park-and-ride commuter parking lot.

The entire site was rezoned by the city in 2017 from single-family residential use to general business, which could accommodate a self-storage facility.
