What Devin Leary did that Russell Wilson, Philip Rivers, other NC State football QBs never accomplished

NC State quarterback Devin Leary unsurprisingly had a hand in the Wolfpack's first two touchdowns against Charleston Southern in Raleigh on Saturday. Or, if you will, a foot.

The junior scored on runs of 2 and 12 yards as NC State went on to defeat the Buccaneers 55-3 at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh. Then, he threw for four more.

Those six touchdowns put Leary in elite company at a program that's produced NFL stars Philip Rivers, Russell Wilson, Jacoby Brissett, Roman Gabriel and Mike Glennon.

Leary on Saturday became the first NC State quarterback to pass for four touchdowns and run for two, adding his name to the list of touchdown responsibility record-holders with a program-high six in a single game.

Rivers and Glennon also had six-TD games for the Wolfpack.

Leary completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for 238 yards Saturday before being pulled for backup Jack Chambers early in the third quarter.

With impressive scoring passes of 24, 40, 20 and 27 yards, Leary's biggest highlight came on his 12-yard TD run. Out of the shotgun, he ran up the middle and took contact about 4 yards from scrimmage. Slowed but not stopped, he lunged ahead and bounced off another defender. He took a solid shot right on the numbers from safety Boogsie Silvera at the 3-yard line and kept his momentum going into the end zone as another tackler held onto his left leg.

"If I've got to get a little gritty, I'm willing to do it," Leary said after giving credit to his offensive line for creating a hole in the defense.

"I just saw that red end zone and nothing was stopping me from getting into it."

As for tying the school record with six touchdowns, Leary stayed humble.

"I think it's an awesome honor," Leary said. "Just being in categories with Mike Glennon and Russell Wilson, that's an honor itself. But being able to play here at NC State, being able to play here and represent this university and playing to my best ability, that's all that I can really do."
