The Green Bay Packers selected Georgia defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt with the No. 28 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Here are three things to know about Wyatt:

Part of a stacked D-line

Wyatt’s stats might not seem all that impressive. He has just 5 sacks and 113 tackles in 4 seasons at Georgia. Yet he returned for a final season in 2021 even though he knew he would be sharing time on a deep defensive line that also includes likely first-round pick and fellow defensive tackle Jordan Davis, not to mention Jalen Carter, already considered a top 2023 draft prospect. The unit was largely responsible for Georgia’s run to the national championship.

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah said either Davis or Wyatt can make a big difference in the NFL.

“I just know that Jordan Davis, he's a freak,” Jeremiah said. “To be that big and that athletic and to make that many plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage is impressive. Devonte Wyatt is even a little bit more explosive. (If) you want them to stack blocks and play at the line of scrimmage, they can do it. (If) you want to let them get on an edge and get upfield, they can do that, as well.”

Speed to burn

Wyatt doesn’t fit the prototype of a stout defensive tackle. He’s 6-foot-3, 304 pounds, and he ran an impressive 4.77 in the 40. But he might have to bulk up a bit in order to handle a second blocker. Still, that’s something that he can work on once he gets to the NFL.

Possible red flag

Wyatt was arrested in 2020 for a “family violence” incident at Georgia, but the charges were dismissed and Wyatt never missed any games or served a suspension. No doubt, it was something that teams inquired about when Wyatt interviewed with them. Still, there are reports that some teams won’t draft him because of that, which could cause him to slip to the latter part of the first round.
