Dewey voters approved, in a 88-37 vote, Tuesday an $8.2 million bond issue to fix aging facilities, including the construction of a new bus barn, replacement of the elementary school roof, the addition of new interior and exterior doors and windows at all of the schools and the cafeteria and other needed improvements across the campus.

The bond issue will increase property taxes by 5.59%, meaning $5.59 will be added to every $100 of property taxes owed in 2023-24. But school officials note the city is far behind the amount of investment in schools in nearby communities. This investment will raise Dewey from the bottom 40% to the upper third of school system investments among other Oklahoma communities in the region.

Other expected improvements are a parking lot expansion by 300 spaces, replacement of the high school gym ceiling, replacement of aluminum bleachers in the gym with plastic seating as well as other needed improvements across the campus.

In other local election news, David Long narrowly edged out Jerre Jay in Copan's office 1 on the Board of Trustees. And Ochelata split votes evenly on whether to allow the city's Board of Trustees to appoint the town clerk and the town treasurer.
