DIA tops the list of best art museums per USA Today survey

One of Detroit's very own ranks as the top art museum in the U.S. according to a new survey.

USA Today's 10Best Readers' Choice 2023 contest voters ranked the Detroit Institute of Art (DIA) as the No. 1 art museum in the United States.

How does USA Today make the 10Best Readers' Choice lists?

A panel of experts with a background in a variety of fields, mainly travel, selects the top 20 destinations. After the top 20 are decided, it's narrowed down by readers, who select the top 10 by vote.

In 2022, the DIA ranked No. 5 on the list and in 2021 it was ranked No. 6.

USA Today said in the article that the DIA "maintains a collection of 65,000 works, among the largest and most comprehensive in the United States." Visitors can visit over 100 galleries.

Visiting the DIA

Membership at the DIA starts at $65 for the whole year and includes free museum entry, discounts at the DIA Shop, one free entry to a ticketed exhibition, plus additional offers.

Free general admission tickets are available for residents in Wayne, Macomb, and Oakland counties.

Hours of operation:

  • Monday- Closed

  • Tuesday through Thursday- 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Friday- 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

  • Saturday and Sunday - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ticket prices:

  • Adult - $14

  • Youth (6-17) - $6

  • Children (5 and under)- Free

  • Members - Free

Parking: $7

Current events and exhibits at the DIA

"Printmaking in the Twenty-First Century": Features artwork from contemporary printmakers featuring posters, prints, and books.

This exhibit is free with general admission.

The museum also offers off-site exhibitions, scavenger hunts for kids and guided tours.

Dining and shopping operations at the DIA

Dining

Kresge Court: A indoor courtyard that serves wine, soup, salads, coffee plus additional eats.

  • Tuesday through Thursday - 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

  • Friday - 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

  • Saturday and Sunday- 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Café DIA: Quick grab-and-go snacks and bites to eat. Serves your typical American food menu; pizza, sandwiches, soups.

  • Tuesday through Thursday- 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  • Friday - 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. then 4 to 6 p.m.

  • Saturday and Sunday- 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Shopping

DIA Shop: Every purchase at the shop helps fund the DIA's exhibitions and programs. DIA members receive a 10% discount and two special discounts weeks every year. The shop specializes in Detroit gear and items representing the city.

The shop is open daily until 30 minutes after the museum closes. There is a 24-hour online shop as well.
