Streaks rally for win over Pioneers

GALESBURG — The Galesburg High School baseball team faced a deficit after three and a half innings in Western Big 6 action against Rock Island Alleman on Tuesday.

But the Silver Streaks rallied for a 10-9 win over the Pioneers at Jim Sundberg Field.

Galesburg (5-5, 2-1 in WB6) combined for 16 hits as a unit. Damien Snell, Easton Steck and Thad Morling led the way with three hits a piece. Morling and Steck both hit doubles and had two RBIs.

The Streaks' Tristan Legate also had a double and batted two runs in. Kannon Kleine had two RBIs, as well.

Morling allowed one hit and struck five in two innings of relief work for the win on the mound.

GALESBURG SOFTBALL

Galesburg nabs win against Quincy

QUINCY — The Galesburg High School softball team came away with a 4-1 against Quincy in Western Big 6 action Tuesday.

In the top of the first inning, Maci McCants and Abbi Sammons both hit two-run homers for the Silver Streaks (2-7) for a 4-0 lead over the Blue Devils. Quincy’s lone run came in the fourth inning.

Galesburg’s Parker Cash and Annalisa Gibbons had a single apiece to contribute to the Streaks’ four hits.

Sammons allowed one run on five hits, issued a walk and fanned eight in the chalked circle for a complete game victory.

COLLEGE BASEBALL

Sandburg moves to 10-0 in league play

OGLESBY — Led by pitching wins from a pair of Jacks, the Carl Sandburg College baseball team stayed unbeaten in Arrowhead Conference action with a doubleheader sweep at Illinois Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

With half of their conference schedule complete, the Chargers (15-10, 10-0) are the only team with a perfect record in the league.

Sandburg clipped Illinois Valley 5-3 in the opener and grabbed a 10-1 win in the nightcap in six innings.

In Game 1, Chase Mason and Jack Shields each connected for two-run home runs as the Chargers built a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.

The Eagles scored twice in the seventh and brought the tying run to the plate, but Jeron Conner fielded a grounder back to the mound for the game's final out.

Jack Bruington pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Avery Leffler to get the victory. Bruington allowed just one hit and worked around a one-out error in the fifth. He threw 24 of 38 pitches for strikes, and six of his nine outs came on groundballs.

The Chargers struck for three first-inning runs and never trailed in Game 2. Sandburg took advantage of two Illinois Valley errors, a walk and an RBI single from Logan VanHeuklon in the fram.

Jack Barham surrendered only an unearned run on two hits and a walk in picking up the complete-game victory. The freshman struck out eight pounded the strike zone, throwing 50 of 64 pitches for strikes while earning his first win.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Chargers extend winning streak to six

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College softball team continued its hot streak Tuesday with a pair of blowout wins over Kishwaukee at the Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

The Chargers (10-11 overall, 4-3 Arrowhead Conference) have won six straight games and outscored their opponents 88-26 during that stretch. Sandburg has put up at least 11 runs in all six games of the streak.

The Chargers won the opener 15-3 and took the nightcap 17-1.

Leading 4-3 in the bottom of the third in Game 1, the Chargers gave themselves some breathing room with a three-run inning that started with back-to-back singles from Gabby Blanchard and Maddi Benson. Blanchard scored on a passed ball, and Benson came home on an RBI double by Riley Creasey. Creasey later scored on a fielder's choice to make it a 7-3 Chargers lead.

Reagan Eaves was one of six Chargers with a pair of hits in the contest, going 2 for 3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Her two-run shot in the second got Sandburg on the board and was her first home run this season.

The Chargers sent 16 batters to the plate in Game 2 and scored a dozen times in the third inning. Sandburg finished the frame with seven singles, two doubles, two triples and two walks.

Chelsey Catton took a no-hitter into the fifth before giving up a one-out single. She allowed just two base hits and struck out five in a five-inning complete game.

Scots swept by Vikings

ROCK ISLAND — The Monmouth College softball team lost a pair of non-conference games at Augustana on Tuesday, 4-0 and 8-3.

The hosts threw a no-hitter in the opening game and Scots catcher Biancha Luna hit a three-run homer in the nightcap.

The Scots had very few chances in the opening game as Nadia Ranieri struck out 16 and threw a complete-game no-hitter. Monmouth didn't have a base runner until Liliian Hucke walked in the sixth inning. The Scots drew two more walks in the seventh but Ranieri finished off her no-hitter with a pop up and her 16th strikeout of the game. Augustana scored three runs in the third and one in the fourth against Monmouth hurler Abby Leber.

The Vikings scored in each of the first three innings in Game 2 to take a 4-0 lead against Jenna Pauley. In the top of the fourth, MyKenzie Kloess singled and Pauley followed with a single. Alex Chamberlain ran for Pauley and Luna put the Scots on the board with her homer. The blast was her first as a collegian after setting the Monmouth-Roseville High School home run record.

Augustana put the game away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth for an 8-3 lead. Of the eight runs scored by the Vikings in the nightcap, seven were unearned.
