CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The oldest living alumni of the University of Illinois Marching Illini has passed away.

Barry Houser, Director of the Marching Illini, confirmed that Richard “Dick” Cogdal passed away on Tuesday. A student from 1935 to 1939, Cogdal played bass drum, cymbals and timpani under the first Director of Bands at the university, Albert Austin Harding, and graduated from what is now the Gies College of Business.

Even after turning 100, Cogdal stayed active with the Marching Illini. Six years ago, he played bass drum for the Alumni Band during Homecoming, joining fellow alumni and then-current band members to celebrate the 150th year of the Marching Illini.

His daughter said that for as long as her father would live, he would always take pride in the Illini. He never missed a game on TV.

Cogdal celebrated his birthday earlier this month and was honored by current Marching Illini members with a personal concert at his home in Champaign.

Richard “Dick” Cogdal was 107 years old.
