Dickinson High exorcizes Demons in road doubleheader
May 16—BISMARCK — Dickinson High School's baseball team moved to 13-5 overall on the season and 10-2 in the West Dakota Association with a doubleheader sweep on Monday over the Bismarck Demons, who dropped to 7-15 on the season (4-11 in WDA). The wins got DHS off to a great start in what will certainly be a busy week, with another doubleheader on Tuesday, May 16 at home versus Watford City High School at Astoria Park at 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday at Mandan High School starting at 1 p.m. with next-week's Regional Tournament waiting in the wings at Jamestown's Jack Brown Stadium starting on Thursday, May 25.
In the nightcap, DHS dominated the Demons with a 12-5 win that featured a 4-for-4 performance with a double, 3 stolen bases, 2 runs and an RBI from senior second-baseman Jacob Lucas with a great day on the mound from starting pitcher Landon Olson, who scattered 3 hits and allowed only 2 earned runs on the way to a 7-strikeout game over five innings.
The Midgets scored 8 runs while blanking Bismarck in the first three innings and never looked back, as sophomore third-baseman Jack Price kept up the pressure with a 2-for-2 day and added a run and a pair of RBI. Meanwhile, senior outfielder Hunter Deschamp added a triple in the game and Olson helped his own cause with an RBI double and a pair of stolen bases with a run.
The opener was significantly tighter, as Dickinson was held scoreless for the first three innings but Bismarck built a 3-0 lead with 2 in the first frame and 1 in the second. But the Midgets came stomping back to tie the game in the top of the fourth with a two-out rally, as Kaeden Krieg scored Jace Kovash on a line-drive single up the middle after Kovash had reached on an error and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Camden Kubas. Krieg advanced to second on the throw, and was plated by Jadon Bast's double to right-center field with Bast moving to third on an error during the play. Olson then ripped a single to left-field to send Bast home and tie the game at 3-3, giving DHS some light at the end of the tunnel.
The Midgets would take their final lead in the top of the sixth, as Krieg singled and then stole second on a pickoff attempt before being advanced to third on a ground-out by Bast. Krieg scored on Olson's single to left-field — which gave DHS a 4-3 lead — and Bast came on to strike out the side and close out the game in the final frame.
