Dickinson Volunteers fall short in nail-biting doubleheader against Watford City

Jun. 19—DICKINSON — The Dickinson Volunteers American Legion baseball team fell to the Watford City Walleye Post #29 on Saturday, June 17, losing the nightcap 8-7 after being stumped in the opener, 7-3 at Dakota Community Bank and Trust Ballpark. The losses drop the Volunteers to 2-4 on the 2023 summer season, and set up the rest of a six-game homestand that continues with a doubleheader on Wednesday, June 21, versus Mandan.

Only game results and full stats were available at press-time for the Saturday opener, with Watford City pushing 4 runs across the plate in the top of the third inning to draw first blood in the contest.

Dickinson responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame on a walk to second-baseman Drew Gabel, who quickly advanced to second on a passed-ball and scored on a double from shortstop Tyler Danbom to close the gap to 4-1.

Watford City again jumped all over the Volunteers with 3 runs in the top of the fourth to close out the scoring for the Walleyes, but Dickinson managed to claw back in the bottom of the sixth on the strength of a single by right-fielder Will Easum and he was driven home on a single by Gabel.

Dickinson's third run of the day was the result of first-baseman Jake Balliet being hit by a pitch in the seventh inning and soon being driven all the way round the bases by an RBI double from Easum to left-field.

While the Volunteers didn't manage any more runs in the game, they held Watford City scoreless for the final three frames, with relief pitcher Trent Anderson taking the mound for two innings and allowed only two hits while walking none.
