Dickson will once again provide a showcase for the city’s downtown growth later this month.

The Dickson Street Festival is returning Saturday, June 25 for a second year with plans for more attractions, bands, vendors, and food trucks as well as more closed off streets.

“These type events give us an opportunity to show both our local residents and outside visitors just how amazing and welcoming Dickson can be,” said Downtown Dickson Association events organizer Michael Shepard. “All of these events are family friendly and create an opportunity for us to all come together for a good time in celebration of not just Dickson but life in general.”

Last year, organizers estimated about 7,000 people attended with about 10,000 anticipated this year.

Main Street will be closed off for pedestrians only from College Street to East Chestnut Street where the War Memorial Building is located.

“The downtown district is much bigger than what we are utilizing and we would love to continue to expand our footprint in the area to as far as the future farmers market (about two more blocks to East Rickert Street),” Shepard said.

Organizers have said since last year that a major focus of the festival was to showcase Downtown Dickson’s revitalization.

Since “Phase 1” of the revitalization was completed in November 2011, downtown has undergone three more stages of revitalization work with a fifth stage beginning soon. In addition to the roughly $5 million in enhancement work, which was mostly financed through state grants, several new businesses have opened or are scheduled to open throughout the downtown area.

Schedule of events

The festival starts at noon and lasts until 9:30 p.m. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m.

Activities include bands playing every hour during that time on four stages: North Main Street, South Main Street, Holland Park and a stage near the War Memorial Building.

The headlining bands play from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Holland Park.

Another large draw is the Robert Spicer Tennessee State Buck-Dance Championship at the War Memorial Building Stage. Competition starts at noon and registration begins at 11 a.m.  Cost: $5 per person, per category and $30 per Dance Team.

Organizers expect more than 100 vendors, including more than a dozen food trucks.

In addition, cooling stations will be provided at Waychoff Park and for dogs in front of Milk and Honey on Main Street.

The Kids Zone areas will include bouncy houses on North Main Street, South Main Street and a bouncy obstacle course on Walnut Street.
