Did Arizona State football's Jayden Daniels make right choice returning for senior season?

Arizona State football quarterback Jayden Daniels announced on social media Thursday that he would be returning to Tempe for his senior season.

Was it the right choice?

There had been some speculation that Daniels would enter the 2022 NFL Draft and to a lesser degree, some talk that he could transfer somewhere for his senior season.

That speculation ended with Daniels' announcement.

Daniels connected on 186 of 280 passes for 2,221 yards with 10 touchdowns in his junior season for the Sun Devils.

He had nine interceptions after coming into the season having thrown only three in his first two years combined (16 games).

Daniels also ran for 670 yards and six touchdowns

Some NFL writers and media members felt that Daniels' decision to return to ASU in 2022 was a wise one, according to their takes on Twitter.

Not everyone seems to agree, however.

Bleacher Report had Daniels ranked as the No. 6 QB in the 2022 NFL draft in a recent ranking.

Kristopher Knox wrote: Arizona State's Jayden Daniels is a dual-threat quarterback who will appeal to teams that look to fill the modern mold of quarterback play. The seventh-ranked quarterback on the B/R Scouting Department's big board, Daniels could sneak into the second round. Daniels' game has a lot of Lamar Jackson in it, as he's a pass-first quarterback who can burn defenses on the run. At 6'3" and only 185 pounds, his build is a concern, but Daniels is a gamer who won't shy away from the big moment. … In his third year as a starter, Daniels continues to flash his dual-threat ability. He's thrown for 1,879 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions. He's also rushed for 482 yards and four scores. If Daniels can add some mass and continue to improve his touch during the predraft process, he could be a prospect like Hurts who teams target for Day 2."

Last month, NFL Draft Diamonds had a story comparing Daniels to Trey Lance of the San Francisco 49ers.

Daniel Kelly wrote: "As a guy who looked Bill Belichick in the eyes and convinced him to hire me, let me say Daniels is superior to Lance in every way. Daniels can actually make a defender miss in the open field. 49ers’ head coach Kyle Shanahan would have looked like a genius, had he waited a year and selected Daniels instead of Lance. Daniels could have come into San Francisco and actually run that two-QB system entrusted to Lance with Jimmy Garoppolo. If I am the general manager of the Arizona Cardinals or the Philadelphia Eagles, I am doing everything I can to select Daniels in the third round of the 2022 NFL draft. Daniels can plug in behind Kyler Murray or Jalen Hurts, and either of those teams would be set. I do not understand what I am hearing from other “draft experts,” and other trusted sites. Bleacher Report has Daniels ranked as their 7th best QB and Sports Illustrated said Daniels possibly could go in the fifth round. Let me step in and say this – – I am going to give Daniels the highest grade anyone has given him. Daniels is my 4th QB on my draft board behind Matt Corral, Carson Strong, and Desmond Ridder. Give me Daniels any day of the week over QB’s Kenny Pickett or Sam Howell."

Last month, Fansided's Jacob Schyvinck wrote about Daniels' NFL potential.

He wrote: "Now, there are still things for Daniels to work on, including finding the check down option quicker against a heavy rush and not drifting too far back in the pocket/running into sacks, but the improvement in key areas is good to see. The arm talent, tools, and great athleticism as a runner make Jayden Daniels an intriguing talent for the 2022 NFL Draft. He’s still likely a day two guy if he declares at the moment, but there’s still plenty of season in front of him to make a move in this quarterback class. Nothing is nailed down yet, so be weary of Daniels down the stretch in 2021."

Daniels appears to now have a great chance to improve that potential in 2022.
