Did the first presidential debate help Trump or Biden? Here’s what betting odds show

Betting odds for the Nov. 3 election have shifted following the first debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden.

The 90-minute debate Tuesday night was packed with interruptions and broken rules, falsehoods and personal attacks as the candidates discussed topics such as the coronavirus, the economy, the Supreme Court and race and violence in American cities.

But which candidate came out on top? Here’s what betting odds show.

On the site Sports Betting Dime, Trump’s odds of winning the election were sent “plummeting” from +107 to +128. The positive number means the result is unlikely, and the value means a person would win $128 on a $100 wager.

Meanwhile, Biden’s odds of becoming president improved from -129 to -148. With those odds, a person would have to bet $148 to win $100 if they are right.

Leading up to the debates, odds on the site had “stagnated.” Biden moved from -130 the week before to -129 Tuesday while Trump went from +108 to +107.

Other bookmakers also show similar changes following the debate.

Hours before the debate, betting site The Action Network had +120 odds that Trump would win in November and -137 odds for Biden.

After the debate, Trump’s odds shifted to +138, giving him a 39.4% implied probability of winning in November, the site says. Meanwhile, Biden’s odds updated to -161, giving him a 61.7% implied probability.

The means Biden got a 7.3% boost while Trump dropped 3.4%.

A news release from gambling.com also shows odds shifted in Biden’s favor.

The former vice president’s odds of winning improved from -129 before the debate to -147 after the debate while Trump’s went from +120 before to +125 after.

New opinion polling also found that many Americans who watched the debate favored Biden’s performance, McClatchy News reports.

A CNN poll of registered voters found 60% thought Biden did a better in the debate while 28% said Trump did a better job. In a CBS News poll, 48% of voters thought Biden won the debate while 41% said Trump won and 10% said it was a tie.

Trump and Biden will meet on the debate stage again Oct. 15 and Oct. 22.
