Did your high school make U.S. News' rankings of best in New York?

Twenty-five Lower Hudson Valley public high schools ranked among the top 100 in New York state in U.S News & World Report's annual list for 2023-24.

Bronxville High School ranked highest in the region for the second year in a row; No. 16 in New York and No. 151 in the nation. Last year, the school ranked No. 13 statewide and No. 145 nationwide.

Rye (No. 17 in the state) and Edgemont (19) were the only other schools in the region to make the top 20 in New York. Almost 1,200 schools in the state were ranked.

Pearl River High (91) was the only Rockland County high school to make the top 100 in the state this year. Nanuet High School, Rockland's highest finisher last year, came in as No. 172 in New York.

Carmel High School is the top-ranked Putnam County school at No. 165.

U.S. News' top-ranked school in New York is the High School for Mathematics, Science and Engineering at City College of New York in Manhattan. It ranked No. 22 in the nation. Last year's top school, Townsend Harris High School in Queens, ranked No. 2 statewide and No. 24 nationwide.

Queens High School for the Sciences at York College (3), Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan (4), and Staten Island Technical High School (5) round out U.S. News' top five.

The Early College at Guilford, in Guilford, North Carolina, is this year's No. 1 high school in the country.

U.S. News & World Report uses six factors to rank over 17,000 schools across the country: graduation rate; college readiness based on AP and IB exam scores; availability of college-level classes; state test scores; state assessment-based proficiency in core subjects like math, science, and English; and the performance of "underserved" minority populations like Black and Hispanic students.

U.S. News' report recently adjusted their methodology to account for how curriculums were impacted after the pandemic.

The closely watched annual rankings have been widely criticized for, among other things, favoring schools in affluent communities that regularly produce high test scores and graduation rates.
