Did Matt Nagy help Mahomes ace pre-draft meeting with Chiefs? Here’s what he said

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes revealed a secret Thursday: He had some extra help ahead of his 2017 pre-draft meeting with Chiefs coach Andy Reid.

Mahomes spoke about the topic on Thursday’s “New Heights” podcast episode with teammate Travis Kelce (and Travis’ brother Jason), saying that the night before he was scheduled to meet with Reid for the first time, then-offensive coordinator Matt Nagy gave Mahomes the plays that Reid was going to go over the next day.

“So of course, I crushed the meeting,” Mahomes said on the “New Heights” podcast. “I stayed up all night studying those plays.”

Now the Chiefs quarterbacks coach, Nagy was asked Thursday whether he had given Mahomes those particulars in advance of the pre-draft meeting.

“Yeah, maybe a little bit,” Nagy said with a smile.

Nagy remained vague when asked for more details about helping out Mahomes in 2017. At the time, John Dorsey was the Chiefs’ general manager, while current GM Brett Veach was co-director of player personnel.

“Obviously, I think it was very safe to say that there was a major consensus in our building of who we liked,” Nagy said. “So me being the coordinator slash quarterback coach, I could have a little part of that to help out and see where he’s at.”

In the podcast episode, Mahomes said Nagy at the time “really liked me.” Nagy admitted to that much Thursday, saying his interactions with the Texas Tech quarterback only reiterated a belief that he was special.

“For me, when you met the person, when you met Patrick, he’s impossible to not like,” Nagy said. “Then you put the tape on, you start watching, and you can’t put the clicker down. And you just watch more and more and more.”

Nagy wasn’t the only one impressed by Mahomes. Veach — he played football with Nagy at the University of Delaware — also famously pushed Dorsey and Reid to take a deeper look at the QB.

“Veach was very big on Patrick,” Nagy said, “and I think it goes to show that he definitely knows what he’s looking at with talent.”

The conspiracy theories could potentially take off from there. For example, did Veach tell Nagy to give Mahomes the plays beforehand, hoping Mahomes would make a better impression on Reid? Did more front-office staff members know this was about to take place?

Nagy remained mostly mum on that topic Thursday, reiterating that many Chiefs staff members besides him were fans of Mahomes.

“Some may have known a little bit, and some may have not,” Nagy said.

This much is certain: The Chiefs are thrilled with how things turned out, trading up to No. 10 to select Mahomes in that 2017 NFL Draft.

One event that led to him being taken there: A meeting with Reid where the coach became even more sold on what Mahomes could become.

“I seemed like I was a guru in a sense,“ Mahomes said on the “New Heights” podcast, “because I knew every single play and every check.”

Nagy, while deadpanning Thursday, seemed content with his role in that part of Chiefs history.

“I thought Patrick did a helluva job on the test. Coach was giving him some good questions on the plays, and Patrick, man, he knew what he was doing,” Nagy said. “It was impressive.”
