Did You Miss NNK Group's (HKG:3773) 36% Share Price Gain?

Simply Wall St

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But one can do better than that by picking better than average stocks (as part of a diversified portfolio). To wit, the NNK Group Limited (HKG:3773) share price is 36% higher than it was a year ago, much better than the market return of around -7.5% (not including dividends) in the same period. That's a solid performance by our standards! On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 19% in three years.

NNK Group isn't a profitable company, so it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.

NNK Group grew its revenue by 0.5% last year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. The modest growth is probably largely reflected in the share price, which is up 36%. That's not a standout result, but it is solid - much like the level of revenue growth. Given the market doesn't seem too excited about the stock, a closer look at the financial data could pay off, if you can find indications of a stronger growth trend in the future.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between NNK Group's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that NNK Group's TSR of 36% over the last year is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that NNK Group rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 36% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 5.9% per year over three years. The optimist would say this is evidence that the stock has bottomed, and better days lie ahead. You might want to assess this data-rich visualization of its earnings, revenue and cash flow.
