Did students face discipline for ‘trashing’ MS Coast high school in senior prank?

Students who “trashed” St. Martin High School last week as part of the senior class prank faced discipline and will have to pay for damages, the Jackson County School District superintendent announced Monday.

Superintendent John Strycker said the students took part in the prank Thursday night, May 12.

“Even with the late evening prank, school proceeded as scheduled Friday morning,” Strycker said in a press release. “The building was cleaned up by students, faculty, and staff. Administration quickly identified students involved in the incident. Discipline interviews were conducted with those responsible for the damage.”

The damage total is estimated at less than $500, Strycker said.

“After reviewing school surveillance footage and conducting interviews, it was determined there was no malicious intent regarding the damaged items. A prank got out of hand resulting in some minimal damage,” Strycker said.

A video of the damage was posted on TikTok and YouTube and went locally viral.

Next spring, the high school will employ a 24-hour security guard to ensure students can’t break into the school for another prank.

“We have good students who made a poor choice in this case. We will deal with them appropriately. We also understand that kids will be kids and want a senior prank as part of their memories…just no longer inside our building,” Strycker said.
