The Conservative Party suffered a humiliating by-election defeat after the Liberal Democrats scored a historic win in Chesham and Amersham. The seat had been a Conservative stronghold since its creation in 1974, but is now home to the country's newest MP, Lib Dem Sarah Green.

Major issues in the by-election campaign included the HS2 rail line, which cuts through the constituency, and the Government's proposed planning reforms, with one Tory MP characterising the election as a 'planning by-election'. "HS2 and Brexit were sideshows. Both are done. This was a planning by-election and the Lib Dems really pushed the message on the reforms."
