"It cannot be explained. Just like you can't explain what Diego made you feel when he was playing. Diego was rebellion. You had to feel Diego. I could go on for 10 hours and you wouldn't understand. You had to be a footballer, have passion and then you would know what Diego was. Happiness, sadness, rebellion. I think everyone today felt like something died, your childhood died, your mother died, your father died, this is what it feels like or at least that is what it feels like to me."

STORY: Crowds of Argentines gathered in Buenos Aires on Thursday (November 26) to bid farewell to one of the nation's favourite sons, soccer great Diego Maradona, a beloved athlete whose life was marred by struggles with addiction.

Soccer fans lined up outside the pink-hued Casa Rosada presidential palace where Maradona's body will lie until Saturday (November 28), holding flags and pictures of the player.

"I think everyone today felt like something died, your childhood died, your mother died, your father died, this is what it feels like or at least that is what it feels like to me," said soccer fan Mauro Gimenez.

Maradona died aged 60 following a heart attack at home on Wednesday (November 25). Huge crowds are expected to visit his casket as part of three days of national mourning declared by President Alberto Fernandez.

'Diego,' 'Pelusa,' or simply 'God,' as Maradona was known, was revered in Argentina and had a long career that included leading the South American nation to World Cup glory in 1986.

Maradona battled various health problems over the years as a result of his addictions. Earlier this month, he was hospitalized for symptoms including anaemia and dehydration and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma.
